San Antonio is now the ninth largest city in the United States maintaining a strong sense of history, tradition and culture. San Antonio was founded in 1718 by Father Antonio Olivares when he established Mission San Antonio de Valero. Later it became what is known today as The Alamo, where 189 defenders held the old mission against over 4,000 Mexican troops for a long 13 days.
Another one of San Antonio's most unique attractions is the Paseo del Rio, better known as the "River Walk." It lies 20 feet beneath ground level and was first home to Native Americans until Spanish explorers and missionaries came upon the river in 1691. The River Walk stretches for over 2 1/2 miles from the Municipal Auditorium to the King William District. The attractions on the River Walk include unique shops, restaurants and high-rise hotels.
Other San Antonio attractions include: • San Antonio Zoo • Brackenridge Park • Sea World San Antonio • Six Flags Fiesta Texas • San Antonio Spurs • San Antonio Rampage of the International Hockey League • San Antonio Missions Minor League Baseball Team • San Antonio Silver Stars of the Women's National Basketball Association
