Center For Cultural & Language Studies (CCLS)

At Baptist University of the Américas' Center for Cultural & Language Studies (CCLS), we understand that culture and language are intricately interrelated.

In learning another language, we gain knowledge of other people’s thoughts, dreams, values, and history. It goes further than learning about conjugating verbs, using a different syntax or learning new phonetic sounds. It is about finding cultural bridges, and discovering that in the act of affirming other people’s identity and way of life, we strengthen our own values and discover that basically in our diversity we have unity.

That's why we're here to help you learn and practice the Spanish language in authentic, structured conversational situations with native speakers from different Latin American countries.

In both our week-long winter and summer sessions, you will learn vocabulary and grammar appropriate for your individual level. The course of study is  uniquely designed for ministry situations, helping you build a significant ministry-related vocabulary so you can begin understanding more Spanish even while you're learning to put conversation together.

You will also learn some practical ministry tools to use with your new language experience. The flexible program of study allows for different learning styles and levels of competency. In addition to visiting a Spanish-speaking church service on Wednesday evening for hands-on fellowship and worship practice, key staff and students will give informative presentations on aspects of Hispanic culture and its implications for Texans in the future. Field trips to area cultural attractions make learning experiential for the Winter session while the Summer session features an immersion weekend in Piedras Negras, Mexico that provides practical exposure to the flow of daily life for Hispanic families.
