Campus
Prepares for Sigueme to Fiesta Event

April 18, 2007
- This Friday
and Saturday, BUA will hold its first-ever Fiesta San
Antonio event with a Fiesta family block party being called
"Sigueme to Fiesta, Sigueme to College." The event will take
pace on the campus grounds on Friday from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m.
and on Saturday from 9:00 - 1:-- p.m.
The event is being organized
by student volunteers with the Sigueme mentoring program
being coordinated by Patty Villarreall.
The block party is a way to
give a little fun back to community during the season of
fiesta, introduce new neighbors to our university, and
build awareness of other community services. With flyers
being distributed throughout Kindred Elementary and other
area groups, we anticipate a significant turnout. Many
volunteers are needed for the event and may sign up by
contacting Belkys Rodriguiz at
brodriguez@bua.edu
or belks1@aol.com
Men's Sports
See Winning Seasons
by
Katie Polcyn
April 18, 2007--
Men's sports
at BUA are thriving despite the many demands on students'
time. The men’s
basketball team at BUA is doing well this semester with six
wins and only two losses. The men play in League at
Valley-Hi Assembly of God which is located on 410 at 90.
Ronnie DeSheles and Gabriel Hernandez represented BUA and
started in the All-Star game for the West last week.
Currently, Curtis Castleberry is second in the league with
the amount of 3-pointers made. The team practices several
times a week to prepare for the games. Ronnie said there are
only five games until the end of the season.
Members
of the basketball team include: Joban Baeza, Cesar Casasola,
Curtis Castleberry, Ronnie DeSheles, Abraham Garcia, Gabriel
Hernandez, Rafael Hernandez, Manuel Martinez, Carlos Ramos,
KJ Ross and Roland
Villarreal, with Ronnie DeSheles and Blake Ross
coaching.
The
men’s soccer team has also been playing very hard this
semester and they have played 10 games. They are coached by
Esdras Reyes and they play in league at Parque Arredondo off
410 on Old Pearsall Road.
The team
has games every Sunday afternoon, the time is "to be
announced" each week. The league started in the end of
January and goes through June or July, but the team will
have to quit playing at the end of the semester when the
members leave for the summer break. The team holds practices
on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 p.m. and also on Fridays at
5.
The
soccer team started out strong with over twenty players, but
been carried semester by ten or so very faithful students.
Coach Esdras has great plans for the soccer team and hopes
each season they can grow in their ability to work together
as a team and develop their skills through weekly practice.
Team member Jaime Cortez said that "winning games is not
just about practicing, it is all about teamwork. That's how
you win games."
As goes
soccer, so goes ministry too, one might think.

Clash of the Talents
Raises Funds, Fosters Teamwork
by Katie Polcyn
march 28,
2007--

If
you were given an envelope with a $5 "talent" in it and
instructed to invest your money to make money for the
kingdom of God, what would you do?
That
was the challenge recently given by Trinity Baptist
Church to its members. BUA students Katie Polcyn,
Alejandro Gonzales and Danny Ortiz decided to pool their
talents with a few others and host a fundraising event
called "The Clash of the Talents." The benefit
basketball game pitting staff and students from BUA
against staff and student members of Trinity BC was held
on Wednesday, March 28th.
There
was a crowd of about thirty fans in the stands cheering
our BUA team on. The game was an interactive game and
for a donation one could “handicap” one of the players
by having them wear a boxing glove, an eye-patch, take
off a shoe or wear a sling. Rafael Hernandez amazed the
crowd when he slam-dunked the ball. Abraham Garcia, Jr.
ultimately won the game for BUA helped out the after
making 4 of 5 free-throws after the final buzzer, a
special feature of the fundraising event.
This
clash of the talents event raised $275 in funds for the
debt reduction of Trinity Baptist Church’s Tri-point
building which is used as a community outreach center
and provides a variety of activities for those in the
surrounding community.
But maybe the best
result was the team work and comraderie that staff and
students enjoyed as they had lot of un together!
Bridge Builder
Dinners Continue Building Relationships for BUA
March 2007--
Drop one of BUA's development staff in any Texas city,
and chances are they have business to do.
That's the philosophy of a
development effort that has been making friends across the
state and forming them into Development Councils in cities
such as Dallas, Austin, Houston, Lubbock, El Paso/Las
Cruces, Brazos Valley and East Texas.
Bridge Builder banquets have
become key events in these areas for building relationships,
sharing student stories and keeping our supporters informed
about new campus developments. Now on their second year of
scheduling Bridge Builder breakfasts, lunches or dinners
continue to serve as one of our best ways to introduce our
students with those who believe in them and their ministry.
The 2007 Dallas Development
Dinner pictured below was recently held on March 6 at Park
Cities Baptist Church in Dallas. Photos include Development
Associate Jeff Johnson with David & Mignon Plyler, donors

now works for Buckner International; Pastor Alex Camacho and
Vice President Arnie Adkison. Click for larger image.

60th
Anniversary Dinner to Feature Tony Campolo
When
Missionary Paul Siebenmann began offering night and
weekend classes in 1947 for thirty-two Hispanic students
in San Antonio, he began a program of education that has
changed the face of Texas and touched countless lives
for six decades.
On May 11, Baptist University of the Américas will
celebrate sixty years of following that vision for
Hispanic theological education with an anniversary
dinner at the El Tropicano Hotel on the Riverwalk.
Dr. Tony Campolo will be the featured speaker for the
evening and also for the next day’s 60th Anniversary
Commencement. Currently Professor Emeritus of Sociology
at Eastern University in St Davids, Pennsylvania.
Campolo champions a balanced approach to Christianity
that advances “the social emphasis to impart kingdom
values to society” as well as “the emphasis to bring
people into a personal, transforming relationship with
Christ, where they feel the joy and the love of God in
their lives.”
Known for his humor, passion and candor, Campolo has
authored thirty books, becoming a highly sought after
speaker and conference leader. His most recent book
published in 2006 by Basic Books is titled, Letters to a
Young Evangelical.
The inspirational evening will also include; music by
the BUA jazz trio, Soul Cool, and by One Spirit, the BUA
women’s praise team; an alumni testimony by Manuel
Hernandez; and a special recognition of the Willard and
Irene Rollins family. A special Silent Auction of items
donated by South San Antonio Chamber businesses will be
held at 6:00 p.m. before the dinner begins at 6:30 p.m.
Dinner tickets may be purchased for $25 for general
seating, $10 for alumni and family of graduates, and $5
for students.
You can make your reservations to share in this historic
and uplifting evening by contacting Karla Romero before
May 4, at kromero@bua.edu, or by callling 1.800.

Faculty
& Staff Note: Extra invitations are being placed in
faculty and staff boxes for distribution to people you
want to invite who are not on our mailing list. A memo
will be forthcoming from the President's Office on
faculty reservations for the event.
Trouble
Viewing eNuevas?
Word is that some
students are having trouble viewing eNuevas because they
either access their email through the on-campus web mail
server, Logixonline, or they do not check their BUA email
account.
Here are a few simple
solutions to the problem, and one harder solution.
First, every issue of
eNuevas is actually posted on the BUA web site on the
eNuevas page, which is found under the "About BUA" heading.
At the top of every eNuevas email (look at the top of this
one) you will find a link that connects you directly to the
online version that will open in your web browser. So, if
you can't see the pictures, click on the online version.
Second, you can request
that the campus information technology department (Louis
Villamar and Elizabett Puerta) arrange to have your BUA
email forwarded to another personal account that you can
view more easily. It's a lot like forwarding your phone
number. Just contact one of them and they will be
happy to serve you.
Thirdly, and this is a bit
harder, if you have computer access at home, you need to set
up your BUA email account in Outlook or other email browser
that you use. Our information technology department is
working on some step by step instructions for this, but this
is your best solution. That way, your BUA email messages
will download every time you check your other email
accounts.
We will also be printing
out a few copies that will be on reserve in the library.
Happy reading!
