Dinner
& Discussion for Young Baptists, Nov. 9th
Texas
Baptist Young Professional Network to Host
Dinner & Discussion
Series on Baptist Life
Young Baptists in
Texas today are diverse. Our diversity makes us
sensitive in new ways to issues of
global change, social justice, and the relevance of
the Christian and Baptist witness.
The Texas Baptist
Young Professional Network seeks to connect young
adults who see value in serving through local
Baptist faith communities. You are invited to the
Dinner & Discussion Series on Baptist Life
on Friday, November 2007 on the Baptist University
of the Americas campus.
Come join the
conversation with other young Baptists. We want all
voices, all perspectives to be heard on these global
issues. In addition to addressing these issues as
Baptists, we’ll talk about the New Baptist Covenant
Celebration in 2008. BUA's Rondalla has
just been given a special invitation to this
important national meeting and several of our BUA
leaders will be attending.
Ten
dinner seats have been reserved for BUA students for
Friday, November 9 at 6:30 PM in the BUA Cafeteria.
If you would like to attend, please reserve your
place by contacting the Office of Student
Development.

CCLS Hits the Road to Georgetown
a report on the Center for Culture
and Language Study from Val Martinez
Val Martinez reports that BUA recently held our
second on-site Spanish seminar. This time Dr.
Guillermo and Ana Chavez traveled to Georgetown.
Most students enjoyed the convenience of having
BUA bring this very important service to them.
The CCLS On-Site Spanish Seminar is an
adaptable format which we began implementing
this past summer.
Our first trial for this format was in Houston
at University Baptist Church. They were in need
of a refresher and a jump start for their folks
going on mission trips into Spanish-speaking
countries. University Baptist Church hosted
BUA’s Spanish Language Immersion: The
Understanding Beyond Words course. The pastors
at the church were looking for something like
this as they sponsored at least 5 mission trips
to Latin America this year. Some of the
participants in these trips desired to improve
their Spanish language skills in preparation.
The format for this seminar was reproduced
October 20th to the 26th
in Georgetown to a group of 11 people who
attended the event which was held at the
Williamson Baptist Association. The seminar
develops basic Spanish conversational skills,
builds a basic vocabulary, and how to lead a
Discovery Bible Study in Spanish.
We are hoping to do more and more of these as
they prove to be efficient and effective for the
students.
The benefit of having an intense Spanish course
with out having to take time off from work is a
very strong feature of this format. While we do
not have another one scheduled at this time we
will let others know of the opportunity to learn
Spanish beyond words.

A Woman's
Testimony is Good News
A
Report
from Hyderabad, India,
adapted from Robbi
Francovich

A first ever book published by Global Women for Banjara
women in English and in their native Banjara
language was presented at the Good News for Banjara
Women conference. Maibai, center in the photo,
is pictured on the cover of the book written by Global
Women board member Dr. Nora Lozano.
Srinivas Naik, far right, translated the book, which is
a Bible Study on the worth and equality of women.
Hyderabad, INdia--
A first ever book published by Global Women was a
featured resource in the Second Annual Good News for
Banjara Women conference held recently in Hyderabad,
India.
"Amazing things happen when women gather together to
share their own story as a part of God’s story, the good
news of Jesus Christ," writes CBF missionary Robbi
Francovich. "We were humbled by the stories which we
shared in tears that brought us all closer to
understanding our worth and calling to be apostles, or
sent-out ones, to our family and community."
In an
amazing closing commissioning service, the anointing of
the Holy Spirit fell upon the women and men, Banjara and
Americans alike, leaders from various ministries, and
young people gathered. As one team member said, “I
couldn’t take my eyes off the beautiful women.” Another
said, “Just when you think you couldn’t have a richer
day…the Holy Spirit came down.”
Baptist University of the Américas alumna, Mary Prassana (BUA 2007) has returned to her native India
and was a vital participant in the conference.
Over 100 women
delegates to the conference represented 20
ministries belonging to the Banjara Christian
Council of India.
Significant steps were taken in the formation and
growth of Banjara women’s leadership during this
year's conference. Sessions were led by the American
team, but also signifcantly by Banjara women
leaders.
Robbi
Francovich lights a “jyothi”, an oil lamp to
open the second Good News for Banjara Women
Conference.
Pictured from left are team members and Banjara
leaders:
Sujetha Naik, Robbi, Poolabai, Mary Prasanna
(BUA 2007), Barbara Calmes,
Kay Holladay, Elaine Allison, Macarena Aldape,
and Lazarus Lalsingh.
The team members represent Global Women;
Mountain Brook Baptist,
Birmingham; Cooperative Baptist Fellowship
Oklahoma;
First Baptist Church Oklahoma City, and CBF.

An Answered Prayer Becomes a
Historical Event
reprinted from the Mayfield
Kentucky Messenger
MAYFIELD, KY--For
the first time in the 163 year history of First Baptist
Mayfield, Kentucky,
it now has a Hispanic pastor on its ministerial staff.
Recognizing the vast mission field opened in Mayfield by the
arrival of large numbers of Hispanics to our city, First
Baptist Mayfield took the lead and hired a Hispanic director
of community ministries five years ago.
The church then began
reaching out to Hispanic people by offering free English
classes. In the fall of 2002, worship services in Spanish
were started with several Spanish-speaking preachers and an
interim pastor. Now the ministry averages 40 to 50 Hispanics
in attendance every Sunday, while at the same time serving
hundreds more through community ministries such as English
and computer classes, tutoring for children, translation and
interpretation services, and others.
For the
last three years, the church had been searching for the
right Christian man to lead this very special Hispanic
congregation. After a long search and lots of prayers, the
Lord called Jaime Massó
(HI-meh Mah-SAW) as their
first ever Hispanic pastor.
Pastor
Massó is originally from the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico
(USA) and is a recent graduate of the Baptist University of
the Américas in San Antonio, Texas, where he received a
bachelor’s degree in biblical/theological studies. He has
also received training at the Instituto Ministerial Oasis
(Oasis Ministerial Institute) of Miami, Florida, and
chaplaincy training at Ryder Memorial Hospital in Humacao,
Puerto Rico.
Previously Jaime served other Hispanic congregations
as a
pastor of Victoria en Cristo Baptist Church in San
Antonio, Texas, and as an associate pastor at Nueva
Esperanza Baptist Church in Syracuse, New York. Jaime
has also done volunteer missionary work in Costa Rica
(Central America) and in Puerto Rico. He has also worked
with HIV/AIDS patients and victims of domestic violence,
among others, while employed at various community outreach
programs in New York.
Jaime
has been described by those who know him best as a very
sociable, easy-going type of man. He likes to help others,
and he is said to be a good leader and teacher. His wife,
Ana Rocío, is originally from Monterrey, México, and has
been described by her friends as the “best cook in the
world”. Theirs is a very good combination since most
Hispanics in Mayfield are of Mexican origin. They presently
have no children.
The
Hispanic population in Mayfield continues to grow and
Jaime’s ministry will fill the need to reach this young
population with the Christian message, and to help lead them
in the path of personal and spiritual fulfillment. Two of
the greatest needs of this population are in
education—adults learning English and helping children in
school— and the legalization of their immigration status.
Jaime states that “the church should be an integral part of
the transformation process of Hispanics in the U.S.”
The
Hispanic congregation of First Baptist Mayfield is known as
Primera Iglesia Bautista, and meets in the First
Baptist Ministries Center building at the corner of South
and 7th Streets in Mayfield. The congregation is
well organized, offering Sunday school classes for children,
youth and adults in Spanish, a vibrant Spanish contemporary
worship service, and great fellowship. This is very
important to Hispanic families since their, cultures place a
great deal of importance in family unity and in the support
it offers in the rearing of new generations. Being away from
their home countries and extended families, First Baptist
Mayfield has welcomed these families with open arms and they
have found a new Christian family in Mayfield, a refuge and
new spiritual support for their families.
