Founder's Day
Chapel and Luncheon, October 16th
According to Gabriel Cortés,
this year's Founder's Day on October 16 has some special
events in store for the University community. "The
Founder's Day Chapel will begin at 10:30 AM with the
main part of the program featuring three former BUA
presidents and President Maciel who will share about
victories they have experienced while leading the
University," says Cortés.
The former presidents participating are Dr. Josué
Grijalva, Dr. Omar Pachecano and Dr. Albert Reyes.
After the chapel, Texas
Baptist Men will be providing a Mexican lunch (picnic
style) outside of the chapel for everyone on campus.
All students, faculty and staff are invited to enjoy the
lunch and asked to bring blankets and lawn chairs . The
cafeteria will be closed. Trustees will also be joining
us for lunch, together with those special guests that we
may have on campus.
Make plans to join us as
we celebrate our rich University heritage.
31 Days of Prayer During October
'Call to me and I will
answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things
you do not know.'
(Jeremiah 33:3)
At the inspiration of student Hugo Gallegos,
President Maciel has called the BUA community to 31 days
of Prayer during the month of October.
Bible studies, student
devotionals and a daily prayer focus may be found online
at
www.bua.edu/inauguration.html
The staff and faculty have been invited to pray daily at
8:45 a.m. rotating the location between various
departments. The President's Office is also working on
scheduling a "Dia de Oracion" on October 22 where staff
and students will be invited to pray in the chapel
continuously throughout the day. May God hear the
prayers of his people.
Art Exhibit
Brightens Library and Hallways
This fall the University
campus has enjoyed a small art exhibit displayed in the library
and main building hallway.
The exhibit, entitled "Blessed are . . . : Artistic Reflections on the
Beatitudes," was secured on loan from First
Baptist Church Austin by Dr. Jimmy Adair. The exhibit
features eight
original pieces of art by Austin artists and was
first displayed at FBC Austin during Lent 2007. In
addition to the art pieces themselves, each artist has submitted an interpretation
of the assigned beatitude to accompany the art, along
with a brief biography.
Sígueme
Mentors Needed
Last year BUA
recruited and trained over 30 mentors as the University
launched a new program, called Sígueme, to match our
achieving students and staff with south side public
school students who need educational encouragement.
Mentors are being enlisted in the next few weeks for
this year and following training will be matched with
area students to provide one hour per week of
mentoring time together.
Students and staff who want to make a tremendous
difference in the life of a child may contact Victoria
Pineda, Sigueme Mentor Liaison, to learn more about the Sígueme program, application process and upcoming
training dates.
The
Sigueme program is administered by the Office of
University Relations and is coordinated by a team of
partners including: Brad Russell, VP University
Relations; Patty Villarreal, Sigueme Coordinator;
Victoria Pineda, Mentor Liaison; Marconi Monteiro, VP
Student Development; Katie Polcyn, Student Council
President; Mario Samaniego, Student Council Liaison;
and Ilsa Garcia, Communities in Schools representative.
