San
Antonio-- In a traditional celebration of those who have gone
before us, Baptist University of the Américas

as guest speaker for the two events. Since 1988, Dr. Lotz has
served as General Secretary of the Baptist World Alliance, a
cooperative organization of over 214 Baptist unions and
conventions comprising 36 million believers around the globe.
The Founder's
Day dinner will be held at the El Tropicano Hotel for an evening
of student testimonies, music and inspiration from our president
as part of BUA's continuing Crossing Over Together fundraising
campaign.
BUA trustees will also be on
campus this week as they gather for their annual fall meeting on

Program Mentors & Pre-College Family Seminars
From Patty V.-- Our
Communities in Schools (CIS) liaison reports that South San
High School is looking for a mentor for a 14 y.o. Spanish
speaking student who just came back to school with a new
baby. She is one of many who could use God's peace in their
young lives. Can this be you? :o) Applications to be a
Sigueme mentor are in my mail box there at school. You can
return them to the box or give it to Adriana Balderas Pila -
the CIS student worker. Know that once you apply, a
criminal background check will be conducted thru Communities
In School. They have also offered to provide a training on
campus just for you if we have at least 3 or 4 BUA staff
submit applications. They've even said they will provide
lunch!! If you are one who teaches at BUA but drives in for
class only, I encourage you to mentor a student in the area
you live or work. A San Antonio student is waiting for
you...........
Also,
help spread the word through your churches about our first

BUA Joins
Hispanic Association
of Colleges and Universities
Dr. Albert Reyes
announced the recent affiliation of Baptist University of the
Américas with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and
Universities (HACU), an association of over 450 Hispanic serving
institutions.
The
Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) was
established in 1986 with a founding membership of eighteen
institutions, making 2006 its twentieth anniversary year.
Because of HACU’s exemplary leadership on behalf of the nation’s
youngest and fastest-growing population, the Association has
grown rapidly in both numbers and national impact.
Today, HACU represents more than 450 colleges and universities
committed to Hispanic higher education success in the U.S.,
Puerto Rico, Latin America, Spain and Portugal. Although its
member institutions in the U. S. represent less than 10% of all
higher education institutions nationwide, together they are home
to more than two-thirds of all Hispanic college students. HACU
is the only national educational association that represents
Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs).
“We have been impressed,” said
Dr. Reyes, “with HACU’s formidable track record for putting the
needs of Hispanic higher education on the agenda of federal
policy makers, agencies, and business corporations. BUA is
pleased to join our voices with HACU as advocates for every
available resource needed by the burgeoning numbers of Hispanic
students across our country.”

Dr.
Albert Reyes has written content for two new
pamphlets in English and Spanish published by the Baptist
History and Heritage Society.
"Hispanic
Baptist Beginnings," and "Los Origens Bautistas Hispanos" are
included in a new series of pamphlets that introduces the
origins of Baptist traditions for students and lay people who
want to know more about their heritage.
The pamphlets will be available in October 2006, priced at .20
each, and may be ordered by contacting Pamela Durso at

Paul
Krauss, Registrar and Adjunct Professor, has been
requested by the National Center for Education Statistics
(NCES) of the US Department of Education to participate in the
IPEDS Technical Review Panel Meeting on “Implementing New
Race/Ethnicity Standards” in Arlington, Virginia November 13-14.
As a representative of BUA,
Krauss invites anyone from the BUA community to voice their
ideas regarding race/ethnicity standards to impact
elementary/secondary schools and universities around the U.S.
"There is a particular concern regarding how to identify
Hispanic students in the US," says Krauss. "There are several
options/opportunities to include selecting a few categories of
races under the umbrella of Hispanic/Latino/as, etc. This
meeting will impact the decision makers in Washington D.C. about
ethnic identity within the education system as well as impact
how and to whom grants and scholarship will be awarded."
Dr.
Jimmy Adair was recently notified that the
Society of Biblical Literature has just announced that it has
adopted his e-journal, TC: A Journal
of Biblical Textual Criticism, as an official
publication of the SBL. Dr. Adair will continue as editor of
TC, which is the
first e-journal that the SBL has been involved with publishing,
drawing on an outstanding international editorial board
consisting of 13 people from 7 different countries. Learn more

Dr. Marconi Monteiro
recently traveled to Brazil to speak at the Annual Meeting of
the Brazilian Pediatrics Society, Oct 6 – 11, 2006.
Dr.
David Maltsberger was recently featured once again on
the History Channel's
re-airing of Modern Marvels: Bible Technology. The epsiode
features a glimpse into the origins of ancient technology iun
the Bible and its use to withstand the elements, build great
structures, wage war, and conserve precious water. Dr.
Maltsberger examines the technological plausibility of biblical
structures and machines--including the Tower of Babylon, the
Temple of Jerusalem, ancient bronze and iron forging, and
shipbuilding skills that might have been employed to build
Noah's Ark. CC
Dr.
Nora Lozano participated in a forum on “Violence
against Women” during the 2006 Baptist World Alliance Annual
Gathering and General Council meeting in Mexico City during the
month of July. Other participants pictured at left included:

Student Team Trains
for DiscipleNow Leadership
Some BUA students just can't get
enough of school! They study all week and then they run off
on the weekends to attend training events to sharpen their
skills even further. That was the spirit of a group of
students who recently traveled to Truett Seminary in Waco to
attend a special weekend of training on how to lead a
DiscipleNow. A DiscipleNow is a popular weekend
long spiritual growth experience for teens that has become
an annual event for many Baptist youth ministries.
The student youth ministry team included:
Mario Samaniego, Lilliana
Perez,
Giovanni Martinez, Caleb Kersh, Herman Mesa, Alejandro
Gonzales, Ashley Georges and Katie Polcyn along with sponosr
Sandee Elizondo. Jaime Cortez, and Priscilla Herrera were
unable to attend the training event but plan to participate
in the DiscipleNow events later this year.
"It was a great experience," said Elizondo, "I was really
proud of our team. One of our BUA graduates who is now at
Truett even came and joined the training sessions on Friday
evening after work."
With this training and
more to come, the team plans to help lead seven different
DiscipleNow events in Texas Baptist Hsipanic churches
between October and February.
