BUA Family Expresses Gratitude to Jeannie Martinez
Photos from farewell reception for Jeannie Martinez on October 31(photos by Claudia Muñoz)

Many kind words and blessings were exchanged as staff and students expressed their
gratitude to Jeannie Martinez for three years of exemplary service as Administrative
Assistant to the President. Of course, with husband Victor Martinez on faculty, we are all
glad that Jeannie's professional departure will not diminish her role as a vital part of the
  BUA family.

Karla Romero Joins President's Office

As staff and students said a "see you later" to our
friend Jeannie Martinez at her farewell party on Tuesday, they warmly welcomed Karla Romero, BUA's new Administrative  Assistant to the President.

Ms. Romero was born and educated in Coahuila, Mexico and has been working in the United States for six years. Most recently she served as administrative assistant to the owner/operator of a McDonald's restaurant franchise that operates six stores on San Antonio's south side.

Ms. Romero has been married to husband Gaddiel Romero for six years and is a member of San Antonio's Primera Iglesia Bautista.

Student "Care Bags" Coming from Corpus Christi Supporters

For five years running, a wonderful group of churches from Corpus Christi, El Compañerismo #1, has been encouraging BUA students with special "care bags" of much needed items gathered from this fellowship of churches.

Next Thursday, November 9, four members of Iglesia Bautista El Mesías of Corpus Christi, led by lay woman Janie Gonzales, are coming to BUA to bring this year's "Care Bags" for 175 students. They will worship with us in chapel and then set up in the north end of the cafeteria on during lunch time. All students are invited to come by and receive encouragement from this wonderful group of BUA supporters who believe in our students.

"Give Something Back" Blood Drive Slated for November 7th

The need is big. Donate blood! The mission of the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center is to collect blood and tissue from volunteer donors and to provide the community with the highest quality health care at the lowest possible cost.

This Tuesday, November the 7th is our opportunity to help our community by donating blood. It is a relatively quick and comfortable process. Go to the parking lot by the Library from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and do something that could actually save a life.

New Student & Staff Directory

At BUA we've got your number, and we're not afraid to use it! A new staff and student directory will help the BUA family stay connected through photos, phone, mail and email. The new directory has been designed and produced by Claudia Muñoz in the Advancement department and has now been distributed via student mailboxes. One copy has been printed for each student and staff member.

Contact Sylvia Trujillo if you are still in need of a directory.

2006 Shining Star Award
Goes to Gabriel Cortés

Last month's staff Encuentro was highlighted with the announcement of this year's staff-nominated Shining Star Award winner,
an annual award given to a BUA staff member who has shown exemplary initiative, professionalism and commitment. The award carries with it appreciation gift certificates for dinner and a hotel stay.

We want to congratulate Gabriel Cortés, Executive Assistant to the President, on winning this year's award.

Gabriel was noticeably surprised and moved to be chosen for the award, saying that "until he came to BUA he had never found a place where he could spend the rest of his life in service, but now that at BUA he had."

Dr. Albert Reyes has recently published a chapter entitled "“Can Baptist Institutions of Higher Education Meet the Needs of Increasingly Diverse Communities?”, in a new work on Baptist higher education edited by Donald D. Schmeltekopf and Dianna M. Vitanza. The work is titled The Future of Baptist Higher Education and is being published by Baylor University Press in Waco, Texas.

Dr. Reyes also has a Bible study chapter, “Jesus’ Passion and Victory” included in The Gospel of John: The Word Became Flesh, a new collection of Bible study materials on John's gospel published by
Baptist Way Press
of The Baptist General Convention of Texas.

     Answered Prayers

Thanks for praying for brother Jim Fowler's son Paul who is currently stationed in
Baghdad, Iraq. Brother Jim wants to share with you how God has been taking care of
     his son:
"Thought I would let you know how God is answering prayer for Paul.
About two weeks ago his vehicle was hit by an IED.
No one was killed. Here’s what God did. The shell usually used for IEDs are the
explosive type. The one that exploded under their vehicle was a luminary shell!
It made a big fire ball, blew out some tires, and broke glass in the vehicle. Paul
said he was knocked senseless for a few minutes and his back hurt for a
while, but he was now ok. GOD IS GOOD!"

Let's keep Paul in our prayers!
