speaker Dr. Steve Vernon assemble for the Convocation Chapel
Service

Chapel Service marking the official launch of a new academic
year.
Dr. Steve Vernon, pastor of First Baptist Church Levelland
and current
1st Vice-President
of the Baptist General Convention of Texas
delivered the keynote address reaffirming our Christian identity
as "middle men" who encourage persons to "be of good cheer, for
God is calling you."
The Office of the Registrar recently announced that on-campus
enrollment for the university totals 235 students this fall with
substantial new enrollment coming from the Bible Study Methods
Course taught on Monday and Tuesday evenings.

Comedian
Cleto Rodriguez Coming to BUA Chapel Oct. 10

When Cleto arrives, it won't be your usual
chapel service,
that's for sure. Cleto Rodriguez is "one of the most
likable and one
of the fastest rising comics in the state of Texas" says his
publicist. He started his standup comedy career in San Antonio
and currently works in venues throughout the nation. He has
worked with George Lopez from ABC's "George Lopez Show," Wayne
Brady of "Whose Line is it Anyway?" and Brett Butler from ABC's
"Grace Under Fire."
Cleto is also a man of deep
faith who realizes that God has called him to minister the Word
of God through his comedy. He has been compared to the late
Buddy Hacket, with a cleaner style and a Latino flavor. Cleto
has also helped donate his money and his time working for the
homeless and the needy in the San Antonio community. Don't miss
this great opportunity to laugh and be inspired all at the same
time!

clips from some of Cleto's performances on his web site.

New Student
Video Team Looking for More Team Members
BUA students have great stories
to tell, and a new team of students is organizing to interview
students and edit those conversations into videos that we can
share with donors and other prospective students. We are looking
for student team members who have an interest in all phases of
production from pre-production planning, interviewing skills,
camera operators and video editing. We have already assembled
some talented students with Danny Ortiz leading out as
Production Manager of the team. Contact Danny at

Sígueme
Mentors Needed
Sígueme,
BUA's new community initiative for mentoring Hispanic youth and
families for
higher education, is now needing students and staff to become
our first wave of mentoring volunteers. Patty Villarreal and
student intern Adriana Balderas will be coordinating the program
which teams BUA mentors up with students at Kindred Elementary
School and eventually other schools, for one hour a week of
mentoring.
"We are looking for at least 20
mentors to start with," says Adriana Balderas. Adriana first
mentored a young girl named Sophie last year at Kindred
Elementary. "It was so exciting to see how she began needing
help in her reading and by the end of year she had made so
much progress," remembers Adriana. "I just want to see the
Hispanic community succeed," she says. "That's why I believe so
strongly in mentoring and what the Sígueme
program
will do for these kids."
Training for Sígueme
mentors will be held on September 20-21, so contact Adriana
Balderas
(abalderas@bua.edu) or Patty Villarreal (pvillarreal@buckner.org)
for more details.

Mission
Club to Work on Habit for Humanity Project, Sept. 30
The Mission Club is joining with Trinity Baptist Church to
work on a Habitat for Humanity project on September 30. The
project is open to students, faculty, or administration that
wish to participate. If you're new to Habitat, remember
that no prior construction experience is required and people
of all skill levels can be utilized. Habitat really has a
great system for volunteers. That day's work assignment will
include:
Install fence fabric (volunteers 16 & up), Install house
numbers (volunteers 16 & up),
Paint interior (volunteers 14 & up), Pre-landscape
(volunteers 14 & up).
Total number of volunteers needed 25.
Dr. Rick McClatchy will be using the project as a learning
experience for understanding the Habitat organization works
and how their guidelines are easily transferable to other
housing ministries. Students from his class may also receive
extra credit for participation and writing
a report over the history of HFH.
Students from
Dr. Russell's Christian Mission class may also earn extra
credit for participation.
