La
Rondalla Livens Up New Baptist Covenant
by Katie Polcyn, Student Reporter

Members of BUA's Rondalla stroll and strum in Atlanta's
Georgia World Congress Center
ATLANTA -- One
of this spring's highlights for students in the Rondalla at Baptist University of the Americas was the opportunity
that they had to travel to perform at the New Baptist
Covenant, a Convention that was held in Atlanta,
Georgia, January 30-February 1. Maria Monteiro,
professor of music and the leader of the Rondalla,
headed a team of
15 students from the school to lead the worship at two sessions
during the convention.
This
New Baptist Covenant was a major gathering of Baptists
from all throughout the United States. According to
organizers, “The leaders of
these organizations reaffirmed their commitment to
traditional Baptist values, including sharing the gospel
of Jesus Christ and its implications for public and
private morality.”
Some
students reflected on this experience. Francisco Kuk
said that he was inspired by former President Jimmy Carter,
“I saw him
like a humble person. He really reflects that he cares
for people.”
Carter was the politician that had the greatest
impact on him, from his speaking at the convention.
Megan
McKelvey said that she really enjoyed the section on
prophetic preaching, which she called "very inspiring."
There was also a
seminar on the criminal justice system which she
attended. Actually, it was so engaging that she attended
twice.
Cesar
Casasola said that on the charter bus there were four
different groups that were traveling to the convention.
The Rondalla, being a musical group, was able to lead
everyone on the bus in times of worship. It was great
for making the twenty-hour bus ride go by faster. His
favorite part of thee trip came after they played for the
plenary session and as
the Rondalla was standing in the hallway, and even
walking to the exhibits, many people came up and
requested for them to play songs. According to Cassasola,
"it was a neat way in
that they attracted the attention of the people and were
then able to lead them in worship."

April 27 - Mission Club Fellowship
with Missionaries
Philip & Diann Whisnand
The Whisnands are common
people serving God in an uncommon place. Most Christians
would never consider trying to reach people with the
gospel at a horse race track. The gambling that goes on
at the race track has kept most Christians away from
doing evangelism and mission there. However, there are
thousands of people not involved in the gambling that
care for the horses. Often these people work and live in
the stable area isolated from contact with Christians or
churches. The Wisnands work as missionaries to those
working at the racetracks. Many they minister to are
Hispanics an often they are here as undocumented
workers. Come and hear how the Whisnands do mission to
reach lost people in an area that most people would
consider off bounds for sharing the Gospel.
Come enjoy the food,
fellowship, and conversation with the Whisnands
The fellowships will be a
come and go meeting at the home of Rick & Janie McClachy,
24611 Long Arrow, San Antonio. If you need
transportation call Rick McClatchy at 210-488-8169 by
April 24.

Under the
theme, “Faith, Science, and Ethics,”
the 2008 statewide Christian Life Conference, meeting at
El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel San Antonio,
will
provide helpful and hopeful insights regarding
appropriate and constructive relationships between faith
and science and critical ethical issues upon which these
relationships weigh heavily. For more information
about speakers and schedule go to the website by
clicking the banner above. You will find a number of
gifted leaders who will help us find
our way through the challenging, but immensely rewarding
conversation between faith, science, and ethics.

u
Continue to
pray for BUA trustee Don Guthrie,
pastor of First Baptist Church
San Antonio, who is recovery from cancer surgery and
anticipating more treatment.
u
Louis
Villamar
would like to thank you for your prayers for his mother. She suffered
a heart attack last January, and was diagnosed with angina.
Additionally she has been treated in the past for high blood
pressure. She is at her home now and doing well.
u
Please continue to pray for our student
Enrique Chavez who had
brain surgery last year and was going through several weeks
of chemo last month.
u
One
of our students,
Darryl Crooms would like to thank you for your prayers for
his son who had an accident on his mini-cycle this month. He
suffered several bad bruises and they thought he had a
broken hip or femur bone.
He lost some major skin on both of his arms and a couple
places on his hip. He
is recuperating fast, he is going to school and he is doing
much better.
u
Brother René
Maciel
asked for our prayers for his
father in law, Darwin Dunham. He had some medical test and
they found cancer. He is in a better condition but he has to
go through chemo this week.
u
One of our alumni,
Ruben
Guerrero, graduated
from HBTS in 1977. He has been diagnosed with cancer. He
is now in hospice. He is at home in Mesquite, Texas. He is
in good spirits, very “uncomfortable” but thanking God for
coming to HBTS especially because this is where he and his
wife, Martha, followed God’s call to missions. Ruben and
Martha have served in many Latin American countries and
lastly with Samaritan’s Purse with Franklin Graham. If
anyone wishes to contact Ruben or Martha, they may do so by
calling their home at 972-686-6011.
u
One of our students,
Pablo Hernandez, is
asking our prayers for his parents. His dad was diagnosed
with stomach cancer and it’s already in the advanced stages.
They are planning surgery to remove his stomach, but they
are not sure if it’s going to be enough to remove the entire
cancer. Brother Pablo is asking us to pray for his mom and
dad, as they pass through this difficult time.
u
Brother
John David
Hopper
has congestive heart failure, and his heart is working at
about 30%. He is weak, but he is able to move around the
house and receive visitors. The praise is that the fluid is
finally gone, and he is able to breathe much easier. We need
to continue to pray for him and Joann.
