Barry C. Tyler came to the Baptist University of the Américas as Vice President for Administration & Finance/Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in September 2012 after decades of higher education experience.

He is responsible for administering the budget, approving all expenditures, managing an endowment, and supervising a team that includes the Controller and Business Office Manager. He oversees the university’s contracts, leases, and loan payments and is a key leader in the development of the fundraising campaign for the future campus.

Raised in Clarendon, Texas, Tyler earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in 1978 and his Master of Business Administration in 1980, both from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene.

Before joining BUA, he created Comanche Business Consulting that specialized in advising small and mid-size businesses on organizational development, funds management, market research, financial analysis and sales development.

Prior to the consulting business, he was Manager of the Institute for Health Living at Central Texas Medical Center in San Marcos from 2009-2010.

Tyler’s extensive leadership in Texas higher education finance includes Director of Finance and Strategic Planning for the North Texas Higher Education Authority in Arlington from 2007-2008, Assistant Vice President for Business Development for the Brazos Higher Education Service Corp. in Austin from 1995-2007, Executive Director of the Central Texas Higher Education Authority in San Marcos from 1994-1995, Assistant Executive Director of the Panhandle-Plains Higher Education Authority in Canyon from 1990-1994, and Director of Operations and Marketing for the West Texas Higher Education Authority in El Paso from 1989-1990.

He began his career at Hardin-Simmons while earning his master’s degree there with increased responsibilities, rising from Director of the University Student Center to Dean of Students to Registrar to Adjunct Faculty in the School of Business. He then was named Vice President for Enrollment Services for seven years.

A resident of Wimberley, Texas, for over 20 years, Tyler has served in a variety of civic organizations, including the Wimberley Board of Adjustment, Wimberley Mayor’s Fitness Council, Lions Club, Emergency Medical Services Board of Directors and on the Board of Trustees of Katherine Ann Porter School, a state-funded charter school.

He and his wife of 43 years, Betty “Bea,” have two children. Daughter April, a registered Nurse Anesthetist, is married with two daughters. Their son, John, is a Civil Engineer and is married with a daughter.
